I haven't read anything by Susan Sontag before, shame on me! I read The Volcano Lover (Jonathan Cape, 1992) because I wanted to know more about William Hamilton, the Scottish diplomat and volcano expert. And starting with a novel is always a good idea. But I kind of forgot my subject and got engulfed in Sontag's way of looking at the world and her description of it. This is a wonderful, wonderful book. Read it!I say: ****(*)
